About This Spot

Stepping into Azucar feels a bit like finding a quiet corner of Havana tucked away in the heart of Houston’s Westheimer corridor. The bakery’s modest size and warmly lit interior create an inviting pause from the city’s rush, where the aroma of freshly baked bread and sweet spices gently mingles with the hum of friendly conversation. Here, the pace slows to a comfortable rhythm—one that encourages lingering over a cup of cappuccino or savoring a slice of cake that whispers stories of tradition and home.

Azucar is not just a stop for satisfying a sweet tooth; it’s an intimate glimpse into Cuban culinary simplicity and care. The charm lies in the balance between sweet and savory—from tender, flaky pastries to sandwiches that carry the warmth and crunch of a kitchen passed down through generations. You can feel the pride in every bite, whether it’s a pillowy merengue-topped treat or a layered Cuban sandwich that arrives just right—crispy edges meeting soft, flavorful fillings.

The friendly and attentive staff contribute to the sense of comfort, making each visit feel genuinely welcoming. Even on a busy day, there’s that feeling of being looked after, as if you’ve just discovered a local secret worth returning to. It’s a place where authentic moments unfold quietly: a shared smile over a morning coffee, the joy of tasting something new, and the gentle pace of an afternoon pause.

For those who delight in exploring cultural textures through food, Azucar offers an experience grounded not in flash but in heartfelt tradition. It’s a spot that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression—like a favorite song you find yourself humming on the walk back out into the city.

Just fell in love with this amazing bakery. Loved their pastries and cakes. Taste great and priced reasonably well. Glad I found this place near Galleria.

The pastries that we got,a cortadito and Mamey shake were good, fresh, tasty. They have so many Cuban style desserts The place is small. Just big enough to eat in. I forgot the make sandwiches

I was pleasantly surprised by this cute little bakery. We came into town to go to the shop next door and decided to swing in here too. I highly recommend the food was great. It smelled amazing, and it was Delightful, to be able to try a different culture's food.

I love all things pastry and bakery!! This place was a great discovery. Greeted by 2 friendly servers. Even with a language barrier we were able to communicate via a phone app translation. I'm not a connoisseur of authentic Cuban baked goods. Though I can tell you these are delicious baked goods! I enjoyed the diverse variety of sweet and savory items offered as well as the breads. We bought a variety of pastries and enjoyed the fresh baked flavors. We look forward to visiting again!

Azucars culture is from Cuba and when I say their desserts and coffees are top notch I kid you not. Their sandwiches are warm, crispy, and delicious. The staff are attentive and very courteous, small and inviting. Overall I give this establishment a 9/10 only because there is always room for growth not be because they did anything wrong. Must try.

After a year of working in Texas and being completely disappointed by the local food scene, finding this gem was an absolute miracle! I stumbled upon it by accident, and I'm so glad I did. The cafecito was absolute perfection, made correctly with evaporated milk—a detail only truly authentic Cuban spots get right. And the pan con bistec (I had it plain with just onions) was one of the most flavorful I've ever tasted, even beating out some of Miami's best. Ending my work trip on a high note with food and coffee from my people is the perfect send-off. The staff was kind and helpful, and the place, though a little dated, was cute and clean. Don't walk—run to check this place out, especially if you're traveling through from out of state!

Walking distance from my apartment the coffee is amazing! Bought my grandmother a chocolate and strawberry cake for her birthday. It was absolutely delicious and perfectly sweet. Also tried the beef empanadas, the guayana and cheese pastry. Extremely clean and friendly service. Very authentic!
